COMPARISON OF THE PERFORMANCE OF HIGH DK SOFT LENS PERFORMANCE ON A 6 AND 30 NIGHT EXTENDED WEAR SCHEDULES.

D Sweeney, N O'Hare, C Skotinsky, J Stern, R Wong, T Navidulah, BA Holden, CCLRU, School of Optometry and Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology, University of New South Wales

Purpose:
To compare the performance of high Dk silicone hydrogel lenses worn on a six or thirty night extended wear schedule.
Method:
In a prospective 12 month clinical trial, 154 patients with previous contact lens wear history, were assigned to wear bilaterally an investigational high Dk soft contact lens on a six night or thirty night extended wear schedule. The six night group cleaned and disinfected the lenses overnight after six nights extended wear and then reinserted the lenses. Both groups disposed of the lenses after thirty nights wear. Physiological as well as lens surface performance characteristics were monitored generally using a graded scale where 0 = none and 4 = severe.

Subjective symptoms and ability to complete respective wear schedules were monitored. Patients were reviewed at one week, one month, three months and then at three monthly intervals until 12 months. The differences between the two groups were assessed by the independent student's t-test or the Mann Whitney test. The analysis of variance was used to test for trend over time.

Results:

Twelve month results for the 6 and 30 night groups are presented below.

Conclusions:

Conclusions: With high Dk SCL EW physiological response and lens performance were excellent. In this study no significant differences (p<=0.05) were found between the 6N and 30N wear groups for the variables assessed, with the exception of overall vision.
